DECEMBER’S BOOK 📚 : The Crying of Lot 49
- Thomas Pynchon (2015, 100+ pages, USA):
Books & Beers! Literature & Libations! Alcohol & Alliterations! We are here to provide it all with Teddy’s Book Club, meeting on the second Sunday of each month at 6:30 pm. Amanda will be hosting, and we’ll discuss the monthly selections and choose what we’d like to read for the upcoming month. We hope you’ll join us - but even if you can’t, please still get the book and talk to Amanda about it! Or - even better - strike up a conversation with someone else who is also reading it this month.
Amanda’s Commentary:
Pynchon, oh approachable Pynchon! Although, by ‘approachable,’ I mostly mean ‘not crazy long.’ I guess I can best describe it as a kind of noir novel about mail distribution systems? This is a paranoid, funny, and densely packed novella by an author you probably KNOW you should have read something from. As a group, we are seeming to revel in postmodern lit, and this is a super solid choice to continue our exploration of the style.
Please support your local bookstores! We are part of Changing Hand’s featured book clubs - which means a discount for you: 10% off paperbacks, 20% off hardcovers; in-store and online. Just mention us! Online, you’ll mention us in the ‘comments’ section, and the discount will be manually applied.
